Artificial intelligence will discover and create things that humans were not capable of doing before, but that humans, even if a small portion of them, can still make sense of. Maybe later, AI discovers and creates things humans cannot understand. The former is already happening, and I am excited about it. The latter is far away, and it might never happen, as there may be an upper limit to how intelligent something can actually be. As individuals, we are pretty much as intelligent as we have been for tens of thousands of years. With the proper nutrition and education, a human being of 50,000 years ago would be as intelligent as the average human today. Individual intelligence stagnated, while group intelligence has skyrocketed. It's been over 400 years since a single human could make sense of most of the group's intelligence. Today, even the smartest person can only grasp a small portion of the aggregate intelligence of our species. Intelligence is about understanding knowledge and applying that knowledge. As a species, given the desire and the tools to observe it, there isn't much we can't understand. We may disagree on interpretations, but we can make sense of them. There are very few areas where we are close to being clueless on the "why": string theory, pre-big-bang history, etc. On the other side of the spectrum, there's a lot of shit we haven't done yet with the knowledge we already have. That's where I predict the impact of AI will likely reside. AI won't necessarily understand more than we could. However, it will apply that understanding to a much greater extent. Add robotics to that and BOOM!
