Plato argued that democracy works, but it slowly rots into tyranny. The Greeks experienced this firsthand across multiple city-states. Polybius, who came two centuries later, proposed a cycle of government types (anacyclosis): The virtuous ruler (monarchy), who becomes corrupt (tyranny), is overthrown by the best men (aristocracy), who become selfish (oligarchy), are overthrown by the people (democracy), which turns into chaos (ochlocracy), necessitating a new leader (a monarch). Polybus model, applied to our present, means that we're descending into chaos. And it seems like it to me. Democracy may have done wonders, but that doesn't mean it will continue doing them.
